The grand prismatic spring is one of the largest and most beautiful hot springs in Yellowstone National Park it measures 250ft x 380ft and has a temperature of between 147 – 188 degrees farenheit and considered to be the third largest in the world. An expedition in 1871 gave it its name because of its beautiful coloration, the colours begin with a deep blue centre followed by pale blue, green algae forms beyond the shallow edge and on the outside theres a band of yellow which fades into orange, with red as the outer border in fact it is said to contain all the colours of a rainbow. This beautiful spring discharges 560 gallons a minute.
